What this guide covers
If you are a Pakistani student who has been offered a place at an Italian university, you will probably need a National Visa (D) for study. This guide explains the Italian Embassy in Islamabad's document checklist in plain language. It is written for students and their parents.
This is a summary, not the official list. Always check the Embassy's own page before you apply. The Embassy also says it can ask for any extra documents it considers necessary, so be prepared for that.
The step-by-step process
- Check that you can apply through this Embassy. The checklist says only applicants permanently residing within the Embassy's consular jurisdiction will be considered. The page does not explain how this is decided or which provinces are covered, so ask the Embassy if you are unsure.
- Complete your pre-enrollment application on the Universitaly portal. Your university must validate it. Only students whose applications are validated without reservation may apply for a visa.
- Collect your documents. Get Pakistani documents apostilled and translate non-English documents into Italian through a notary.
- Prepare your financial proof. This is the most detailed part of the file.
- Submit your application with the full set of documents, plus your motivation letter.
Documents and requirements
The main documents for a study visa are:
- National Visa (D) application form.
- One recent ICAO-format photograph.
- Proof of residence: a residence certificate and, for Pakistani citizens, a copy of the CNIC.
- Your valid passport (original plus one photocopy), with photocopies of any previous visas and the entry/exit stamp pages.
- Flight reservation or airline ticket. If your journey has several changes inside the Schengen area, add reservations for those trips too.
- Health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover for emergency hospital treatment and repatriation, valid across the Schengen Area.
- Proof of accommodation: a hotel or residence booking, a guarantee declaration from a private individual (on the relevant form), or a declaration from the university covering accommodation.
- Copy of your Universitaly pre-enrollment application, validated by the university and signed by you.
- A motivation letter addressed to the Visa Officer, explaining why you are studying in Italy.
- The admission letter from the Italian university.
- A Statement of Comparability with a Statement of Verification from ENIC-NARIC Centre (CIMEA), or a Declaration of Value.
- Your previous educational documents: originals with a photocopy, all apostilled and translated into Italian.
- A language certificate. For Italian-taught programmes, you need at least B2 level. For programmes taught in another language, you need B2 in all four skills from a recognised body such as IELTS or TOEFL.
- Proof of financial means (see the money section below).
- A Family Registration Certificate (FRC) for your household, issued in English by NADRA and apostilled.
Dates and validity
Pay close attention to these time limits:
- Submitted documents are valid for six months from their date of issue.
- Your passport must expire at least three months after the expiry date of the visa you are requesting.
- The FRC must be issued no more than six months before the visa application date.
- For employees, payslips and bank statements must cover the six months before the application date. Income tax returns cover the last three years.
- For a retired sponsor, pension statements cover the previous six months.
The page does not state the visa processing time or the visa fee, so confirm these with the Embassy.
Money
The checklist sets two key amounts:
- Health insurance: minimum cover of EUR 30,000.
- Subsistence funds: at least EUR 10,179.85 per year, held in a bank account in the student's name. The page cites a Ministry of the Interior Directive of 1 March 2000. It does not say whether this figure is still current, so confirm it with the Embassy before you rely on it.
The Embassy also explains that it does not judge your finances from one bank balance or one-off deposit. It looks at whether you will have a regular monthly income to support you throughout your studies. Cash, guarantees from people outside your family unit, bank guarantees and surety bonds are not accepted.
If a sponsor is paying for you, they must provide a written affidavit stating the resources, their origin, how long support will last and the amount. This affidavit must be apostilled and translated into Italian.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Missing Apostilles. Pakistani-issued documents must carry an Apostille.
- Wrong translations. Translations into Italian must be certified by a notary, and the notary's signature must be apostilled.
- Relying on one balance. A single bank balance or a one-off deposit is not enough on its own.
- Using the wrong kind of guarantee. Cash and third-party bank guarantees are not accepted.
- Letting documents expire. Check the six-month validity and the FRC timing before you submit.
- Minors applying alone. A visa application signed only by a minor is inadmissible. Minors must be accompanied by one or both parents or legal guardians.
- Applying before validation. Your pre-enrollment must be validated without reservation first.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the Embassy will consider your application (permanent residence in its jurisdiction).
- Pre-enrollment submitted on Universitaly and validated without reservation.
- Pakistani documents apostilled.
- Non-English documents translated into Italian by a notary, with the notary's signature apostilled.
- Passport valid at least three months beyond the requested visa's expiry.
- Health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover, valid across Schengen.
- Bank account in your name with the subsistence amount, checked against current rules.
- Monthly financial picture ready.
- FRC in English, apostilled, issued within six months of the application.
- Documents all within their six-month validity.
- For minors: parental consent affidavit, non-travelling parent's CNIC and passport copies, and court or guardianship papers.
This guide cannot promise an admission, scholarship or visa. Every decision rests with the university and the Embassy.
